Please support my 11 Miles to Remember challenge
More than 8 million horses, donkeys and mules died during the First World War. They carried soldiers, supplies and ammunition through unimaginable conditions. That's why I'm taking part in the 11 miles to Remember challenge to raise funds for Brooke, the world's largest working equine welfare organisation.
Every mile I walk and every pound you donate honours their sacrifice, whilst helping working animals who still need our help today.
Please support my challenge if you can. Together, we can remember the animals who served and help build a better future for working horses, donkeys and mules who still carry heavy burdens today.
Thank you!

War Horses
Monday 26th Oct As a history nerd, I've always been interested in the part horses played on the battlefield. And from nippy little chariot ponies and trained medieval warhorses that cost more than your house through to the last charge of the cavalry and teams of gun pullers one thing stood clear. The people caring for them tried to do their best. But then WW1 hit. War became industrialised and so did the war horse. Thousands were taken from loving homes to do jobs they weren't always suited for. They lived for years in knee deep mud, with little to no decent feed. Kind souls may have tried their best but were overwhelmed so they worked until they fell, either from exhaustion, gas, or an explosive. It was also easier to find a new horse than to rehabilitate. And then, at the end, they were abandoned. Sold cheaply to whoever would take them. Many went for meat, many more into further hard labour with little care shown their way. Noble beasts, once treasured. I walk in their memory.

Yet horses are still being used in the multiple wars happening today. And sadly, their carers face the same problems often compounded with poverty. So I walk to also raise money for those horses too.

An excellent cause , good luck Emma
